  1. What is the difference in the distilled water quality between Multiple Effect and Vapor Compression distillation?

Both MEF and VC produce water that meets the WFI requirements in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.

  2. Is vapor compression used to produce USP Purified water as well as WFI?

Yes, vapor compression can produce both hot or cold USP Purified and WFI water. In many instances, vapor compression is the most cost effective solution for USP Purified water production.

  3. Is it true VC plants run with only softening and chlorine removal for pretreatment?

Yes, because Vapor Compression stills run at a relatively low temperature and pressure (1.5 psig and 218 degF), the soft scale formation seen on Multi-Effect Stills is not a consideration. Multi-Effect Stills will form soft scale from other constituents in the feed water due to the elevated temperatures (300 degF).
